Metal Gear Solid - DAR's Files Repacker (Help)

Postby Spinal » Sat Dec 04, 2010 16:04

Hi there, i'm actually on the modification of Metal Gear Solid PC, and i have succesfully extracted all the MGZ's files (efx.mgz, stage.mgz, stagevr.mgz, and tga.mgz) from C:\Program Files\Metal Gear Solid with Dragon Unpacker and now, i have 4 folders named efx, stage, stagevr, and tga.
In the stage folder, i have sub-folders (levels of MGS), with DAR's files.
For exemple, the Tank Hangar is the s02a sub-folder and i have also succesfully extracted all DAR's files named stg_tex1.dar (Textures), stg_tex2.dar (Textures), stg_tex3.dar (Textures) and stg_mdl1.dar (Models) with Unmass and in the textures DAR's files, there are PCX files, i have modified some PCX's files, but the problem is, no possibility to repack all PCX's files in a DAR file.
So if anyone is working on Metal Gear Solid PC and know a possibility to repack PCX's files in a DAR file, thanks alot for your help because just this action is missing for complete the modification.

Please Mirex, if you read this post, can you make a possibility to repack DAR's File, because with Unmass, we can extract but if i edit a file, actually impossible to repack in DAR file.
Thanks Alot.

Hi ! I have good news - I have added packing ability to Unmass.

Bad news is that I have the program only as a command line tool. That means it is not graphical and clickable, you have to know how command line works and write commands there.
-------------
Here it is:
http://mypage.sk/BIN/ffab/0001/unmassc_093_mtg.rar
archive contains:
unmassc.exe - program
stg_tex1.dar - archive from the game
stg_tex - directory containing files from that archive
test.dar - new created archive, containing the same files as stg_tex1.dar

How to use it:
start / run / cmd

change to your working directory by command cd to place where you have archive and unmassc.exe

see help for the program: unmassc /?

make directory where you unpack the archive:
mkdir test
cd test

from there run command to unpack the archive:
..\unmassc.exe -e stg_tex1.dar *

now change those files as you want
then repack them back:
cd ..
unmassc.exe -c new.dar test

(test is name of the directory where are those files that should be packed into archive)

as result you get new.dar - packed archive with new files. Not really hard, was it?

-------------

Reason is that I don't have Visual Studio with MFC anymore, so I can't recompile Unmass with MFC graphics. I will make graphics through GTKMM, but it will take weeks untill its finished.

But if there is anyone who has Visual Studio with MFC you can download these source codes and recompile the Unmass to get the graphical version working.

here is the source code:

Metal Gear Solid - DAR's Files Repacker (Help)

Postby Spinal » Wed Jan 05, 2011 16:54

Hi Mirex,

yes i have tried it, and it work perfectly!, good job and don't worry about:

"the program only as a command line tool", because i work often with commande line tool for game modifications.

I am actually doing some testing on Metal Gear Solid.

You should rename the tool "MGSDFT" (Metal Gear Solid - Dar File Tool).

Well done, it's the first MGS tool with the possibility to repack DAR files.

Thanks Mirex

Not really, DAR archive is not complicated. It was only time consuming, and also implementing the repacker into program took me long time.

Hi

If I was able to do the 'command line' version of the MTG DAR archive creator it will not be too hard to make graphic one. I will be busy next two weeks but after that post a message again and I will do it for you.

By the way, did you try the 'command line' version? Does it work, creates DAR archives?

PCX editing trouble

Postby ikskoks » Sat Feb 23, 2013 13:27

Hello. I have troubles with editing *.PCX files and then packing them to *.DAR archives.

So all PCX textures in game are in 4-bit format, but most popular programs save edited pcx files only in 8-bit format, so after repacking DAR archive and replacing it in game, textures don't display correctly. (even if i tried save graphic in 4-bit using "PhotoElf" game didn't display graphics)

So i have question - how can i edit PCX files from Metal Gear Solid and how can i replace them in game to display them correctly?

mirex, do you work on grapical version of DAR packer?
